the greatest artist you've never heard of
VINTAGEMOZART ( Liam Vries b. 1994) is a Zimbabwean Afrofuturist, artist, designer, and filmmaker whose work explores the intersection of African and Greek mythology, creating immersive dreamscapes that challenge perceptions and invite audiences to navigate between past wisdom and speculative futures. His multidisciplinary practice uses digital collage to interlace mythological narratives with music, animation, and intricate hand-drawn topographic lines.
These compositions become archaeological excavations of cultural memory, systematically exploring how technology can enhance and redefine the Black experience in the 21st century while advocating for the conservation of both cultural heritage and planetary ecosystems. As the founder of the African NFT Community and co-founder of ancurated, VINTAGEMOZART has built a comprehensive infrastructure that empowers African creators through media production, consultancy, and strategic campaigns, onboarding numerous artists into Web3 while establishing new paradigms for decentralised cultural preservation. His work bridges traditional preservation methodologies with contemporary technology, ensuring cultural narratives and environmental consciousness remain central to future creative ecosystems.
Artist Statement
As an Afrofuturist, I see technology as a means to enhance and redefine the Black experience. My work as vintagemozart utilises digital collage to interweave diverse influences, ranging from mythological tales to contemporary issues. Hand-drawn topographic lines serve as a distinct signature within my digital landscapes, lending each piece a personal touch that echoes both my heritage and my explorations of identity. These lines are more than visual elements—they're pathways that trace human emotions and the unseen landscapes of the mind.
Every line is a deliberate choice, capturing the intersections of thought, culture, and history. They map out a journey for the viewer, guiding them through reflections on space, time, and the intimate connections that define us. My goal is to utilise art to explore the complexities of the Black experience in the 21st century, bridging the digital and the handmade, the visible and the unseen. Through this intricate line work and layered storytelling, I seek to craft pieces that are visually captivating and intellectually profound—a journey across both imagined and ancestral terrain, leading to destinations that continuously evolve.
My creative practice exists at the intersection of design, curation, artistic expression, and community building—four interconnected disciplines that inform and enhance each other. From founding digital communities like the African NFT Community to curating groundbreaking exhibitions like "Distant Relatives," creating the editorial vision for sixteen x nine digital zine, and building sustainable Web3 infrastructure through platforms like Ubuntu Blockchain Union, my work spans multiple creative universes while maintaining a consistent focus on cultural preservation, technological innovation, and authentic storytelling.
Each facet of my practice draws from my background as a Zimbabwean Afrofuturist artist, whether I'm developing visual identities that challenge conventional design paradigms, organising exhibitions that connect artists across continents, creating digital sculptures that explore mythology and speculative futures, or building infrastructure for creative communities in Web3 spaces. This integrated approach allows me to create work that is both visually compelling and culturally significant, bridging traditional narratives with contemporary digital experiences. Explore the four dimensions of my creative universe below, where design thinking, curatorial vision, artistic expression, and community leadership converge to create meaningful cultural impact.
